Labour's general secretary Iain McNicol resigns | The Independent: Iain McNicol, the general secretary of the Labour Party, has resigned in a further sign of Jeremy Corbyn tightening his grip on the party. Mr McNicol has held the role since 2011 but said he was stepping down to "pursue new challenges". He will step aside once a successor is chosen. The party's most senior official has repeatedly clashed with Mr Corbyn's office in private, and Labour left-wingers have long hoped to replace him with someone more favourable to their agenda.
